STORY AND PHOTOS BY Brenda Eggert Brader
A year old Oct. 1, the company came from Orlando moving into Polk County because it was time for the Orlando business to branch out again and grow. Following their existing developer and builder clients, the company has been successful at building up contracts with developers and builders in the county. About 85 percent of the business is commercial. But now the owner says he is eager to boost the residential customers. Jason Crain, president of the Winter Haven business, and his partner, Chris Johnson, thought this was the time to expand the business. There are branches in Brevard and Lake counties as well. “We hunted and hunted everywhere for a business site that we could afford,” said Jason. “When we came over to Dundee Road, we spotted this place that was for sale in our price range. I made an offer and we were on our way.” The company can tackle any type of fencing and offers Maximum Vinyl Products that is a division of Crane’s Plastic. “The manufacturer has a lifetime warranty against cracking, peeling, turning color or deteriorating,” said Jason. “Each fence is placed on six-foot centers instead of the usual eight and the company puts 60 pounds of concrete in each post hole. That way the fence has greater wind resistance.” “The most popular fencing is the white vinyl privacy or privacy with lattice top,” said Jason. And it comes in two other colors besides the white tan and cambium which he describes as a wood-like color. The ornamental powder coated aluminum, shown in a wrought iron look, comes in a selection of colors suitable for home or business black, white, green and bronze. It has a full warranty against peeling, color change or deterioration. Workmanship is guaranteed for three years, something that is very rare. The gates won’t sag and the fence won’t waiver. Jason says his crew uses aluminum centers bolted into the side posts holding gates so the gates will never, ever sag.
Jason would rather the crew take its time doing the job correctly then having to go back and fix problems. He is lucky, he says as he knocks on his wooden desk, “We haven’t had to return to a single job to fix something.” His crew can install a fence in one or two days, depending on the situation. The crew also has to be sure to locate underground utilities and irrigation sprinklers so no damage is done when posts are placed. The wait is three to four weeks for installation, since the fence must be fabricated and the crew finished with other jobs. But Jason said he would rather have his crew take longer, than have to risk relying on the job a subcontractor might do. Jason has a dedicated crew Reyan Innis, Damion Boland, Joseph Rondeau and Leon Adams. “My goal is that I am not going to hire and then have to lay someone off,” said Jason. “So when it was slow in the beginning we shifted the workers to where they could work at another branch and not lose wages. But he says his crew is dedicated to the job and although he can’t pay what he would like to yet, “They know what I am trying to do. As long as they stay, they will have a bright future here.”
